Windows 2003 SP2 running Exchange 2007 SP1  takes too long to log off
Hello,We have Exchange 2007 SP1 64bit running on Windows 2003 SP2. For some time our Exchange servers take almost 15mins to log off. I have enabled verbose so now while logging off it says "Executing: c\windows\system32\wlnotify.dll".I have done lot of research but could not able to find any cause why it is taking such a long time. Please let me know if anyone else faced this same issue. Thanks,RegardsRamanRaman

Greetings, We should be able to work through this. I'm just curious about the method you are accessing the server. Are you using Remote Desktop Connection or are you local? Also, are you working with a clustered solution or is it a single Exchange server (which is what you indicate above, I'm just curious). J. Give a try by Manually stopping all exchange services and then shutting down server. also make sure you dont have any kind of group policy applied for logging off or shutting down server. also post this under Windows Forum Windows Server Forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsserverVinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

Hello Peter and Vinod,Thanks for your responses. Peter,I am accessing the server via Remote Desktop Connection, VNC and ILO. Does not matter what method I use it takes 15mins to log off.We have2stand alone servers both runningExchange 2007 SP1 with Mailbox and Hub Transport Role. Both the servers have this problem.Vinod,We have tried to restart the server few times but this problem does not go away. Although, we have not tried to stop all the Exchange Services manually and then restart the server. We are not using any Group Policy. How can I move this question to Windows forum?I put this question here because this problem is only with Exchange Servers. We are not seeing this issue with any other Server. We have SharePoint servers as well with Win2003 SP2 64bit but no issues over there. We keep our servers upto date with all the curretnt security patches via WSUS. Thanks,RegardsRamanRaman

Hello Andy,Thanks for your response. The link for the blog is quite good. But the issue we are facing does not seems to be realted with memory because it occur even right after the reboot.I enabled the verbose and thought that might give me some clue but it only says "Executing: c\windows\system32\wlnotify.dll" and stuck there for 15mins.RegardsRamanRaman

Greetings,I'm racking my mind trying to think of what might cause such a long log off with no Group Policy. And as you already mentioned you are using different methods to remote in (not just Remote Desktop). I would blame the hardware but you have TWO systems doing it.I need more information. How much memory on those two systems and how many users are you supporting?Another part of me wants you to check things like the IP configuration settings for IPv6/v4 and your DNS configuration.I'm just shooting in the dark here though. I think Andy David will probably get it for you so maybe this information will help him diagnose if you respond back to some of my questions and he might have others.J. Peter

Hi,It seems that McAfee Agent 4.5 (We use ePo server to put McAfee VS and Group Shiled configurations). This latest agent was recently installed but once we re-installed it delay in logging off went away but after some days it comes back. We have escalated this issue to McAfee but we need to recreate this issue so they can run their tools on the server to get the relevant information. Now we are awaiting that log off issue occurs again. Thanks once again to all of you for your help.Raman

I have identical symptoms on one of my servers: Running Server 2003 R2 x64, Exchange 2007 SP2, Mcafee Enterprise 8.8, Mcafee Agent 4.5. Server hangs for 10 minutes on logoff saying "Executing: c\windows\system32\wlnotify.dll", no other error conditions or symptoms. If I reboot the server the issue vanishes for a few days only to return without any apparent cause. I've got the cause down to Mcafee Agent 4.5. If I uninstall then reinstall the agent, the issue vanishes for a few days. Mcafee don't seem to care about this issue, but from what I hear they are releasing Agent 4.6 sometime soon, hopefully that helps. This post comes a year after any other posts in this thread, did anyone ever find a solution?

Hello, No solution yet. I do not restart the server. I have been re-starting McAfee Framework service and that resolves the issue for few days. So when ever I log into the server I just restart the McAfee Framework service. I have also asked other team members if they reboot the server after windows securityupdates or due to any other reason first make sure that you restart McAfee Framework service so it won't get stuck for 15mins in just logging off and that will add the time in server downtime. So we are just following this process. Now we are migrating to Exchange 2010 but I have not seen this issue on Exchange 2010 SP1 with Windows 2008 R2 yet.Raman
